Did the Bible predict the rise of Mormonism
By Jacob Howard
When I first ran into some kids who were Mormons, I immediately thought about them and what God said about Mormonism. I didn’t look into it all that much that day, but that night, I was reading my Bible and came across a verse that has never left my mind since: Galatians 1:8. Here is what it says:
But though we, or an angel from heaven, preach any other gospel unto you than that which we have preached unto you, let him be accursed.
I’ve heard many accounts of who Joseph Smith saw when he prayed, but there is no doubt in the stories that the Angel Moroni came to Joseph and gave him the tablets on which were written the Book of Mormon.
I was very interested in this Angel Moroni because, according to the beliefs of the Mormons and the beliefs of Christians, there are obviously differences to significant to be called minor. Some of these have been documented HERE.
If it were true that the Moroni taught (through the tablets he gave) a different Gospel than from what the Bible had preached, then Moroni, and the tablets and Mormonism would be an accursed religion, as it fell under the preaching of a false Gospel.
As that is a heavy claim, we should look at the Bible and Mormonism before laying it down in stone.
Mormons teach a type of universalism where they expect that most, if not everyone will eventually be accepted into one of the three levels of heaven. The idea of Hell, or Outer Darkness, was something Joseph Smith struggled with and in the end he said that only the “sons of perdition” would be going to Outer Darkness. All in all, he believed few people would be going to Hell.
The Bible, on the other hand teaches that billions of people will go on with life and never become saved and will end up in Hell (see Revelation 20:8). This isn’t because they didn’t know about God or anything, but because they sinned. Sin, according to the Bible, is what sends one to Hell. The Bible in no way teaches that everyone will be saved.
Mormonism also teaches that humans must “help” God on their way to Salvation (2 Nephi 25:23). They cannot completely make it on their own and Jesus’ blood can’t completely take them to heaven either. For Mormons, heaven is a “meet God halfway” thing.
The Bible, however, teaches that humans can do nothing for their own Salvation, that it is ” For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God:” (Ephesians 2:8). 2 Nephi 25:23 says almost the exact opposite of this verse and many Mormons are surprised to see the above verse. The Bible and Mormonism clearly conflict here.
Many more examples of the differences between Mormonism and the Bible can be seen HERE. Please read them and carefully consider what they mean to you and your Mormon faith.
So, what is the answer to the question: “is the religion of Mormonism accursed because it teaches a different Gospel than the Bible?” I obviously have my conclusion, but what about yours? That is the important one. What do you think? Do the facts stick together and show you something about Mormonism you didn’t know? Think about it.
